It was hot, hot, hot in Bozeman this June of 2021. We set up our easels at the edge of an aspen tree grove for some shade. I painted two scenes from this spot at Graf Park, the other looking out onto the edge of Bird Springs Creek. These two comprise the first in my Bozeman series. They’re both heady with blue shades and sunny, toasty yellow. Sparks of playful light dots dance on lime colored grass along with red and orange wild flowers. They create a lush groundcover over which the arching aspen bow, providing the gentle shushing leaf sounds and the shade we so enjoy.

Dickman Mill Park is inspired by an aerial shot over Tacoma, off Puget Sound, Washington on Ruston Way. The leftover pilings once supported a massive platform for both raw and finished lumber being processed by the Dickman Mill Head Saw. It was the last of many lumber operations skirting old town Tacoma on Commencement Bay. Boat in, boat out, massive logs were cut and stored before transport to market.
I love the clear, translucent water on sand, and it’s lack of features other than minute detritis that create the blanket for this mathematic pattern of the pilings. I don’t think there’s a better angle to see the beauty of these pilings than overhead.
Now that the city has commemorated Dickman Mill Park with outdoor sculptures and park amenities, even though the offshore view is picturesque, I’ll always think of it the way I see it in this piece. I’m thankful that OverTacoma.com granted me permission to paint it.
This piece is 3rd in my Puget Sound series, preceded by Stranded at Chambers Bay in a local private collection, and Flow | Point Defiance auctioned for the benefit of Symphony Tacoma.

Early into this piece, balancing an emotional place between calm and panic, I realized about how important it would be for me to remain focused and deliberate beginning that moment, through the end of May, 2018. My husband had been asked to Seattle for a second interview in structural aerospace. A new house, maybe an apartment for awhile, new tutors and schools for my son, and a million things to button up on our house before it should be shown. Excitement, dismay, uprootedness, diving in to the void. Stay steady Today through May.

Fortunities was actually a word used in the 15th century. Taking as much of a liberty with language as I do with canvas, it fits. The open rural vista in Fortunities is embraced by it’s own energy of renewal; that which you’d feel when you’ve been kissed by fresh air, light and wide open spaces. To me, this piece expresses that brightness as it morphs into lightness of heart and an unburdening of load. It’s an opportunity to bask in the promise of a new day. Fortune and opportunity are offered many times over to s/he who chooses to dive into the possibilities of a clear mind in limitless space. Fortune + opportunities = Fortunities, yet once again since c.1470 per the Oxford English Dictionary, full version only.

Fraîche is bubbly and vivid, playful and joyous; a little piece of heaven. I was inspired by a picture of the rocky foothill out our front door in Colorado before we moved to Washington state. The colors are warm, just like a summer day, and the way this piece pops and vibrates, it’s filled with an effervescence I always felt looking out my door. Electric fireflies of spectral energy schuss through tree trunk chicanes. They do all night, and maybe in the daytime. We just can’t see them, but they haunt the forest like feverish Star Wars micro wilderness machines. I don’t think it’s a chase. They’re just having fun. And they’re the life of the sylvan forest of the Pacific Northwest. I do like a pun, and my imagination is pretty vivid. You don’t have to visualize this, because Sylvan Chi shows you exactly what these little sparks of Chi do.

Astral is a little piece of the desert, with it’s night sky animated by ephemeral scatterings flitting towards the heavens. If something I’m looking at isn’t dynamic enough for me, it’s pretty common that I would imagine something occurring that embodies a feeling I get. A busy mind I have. In this case, I felt an energy from the hot desert sending fragments of it’s live environment to where it’s warm shelter while the day issued a signal of its close. How do these live particles of the warm ecosystem make it into their warm beds at night? On floating thermal currents like jellies on the Gulf Stream, of course.

Throw in some squirrely, sprout like impishmess with as many bright colors of the rainbow that you could find. I've been digging up lots of photos of Colorado. This one was taken of a ridge called the "Dakota Hogback" out our front door. The neighborhood kids spent a lot of time scrambling around the base of this ridge, which had lots of rock outcroppings. My thoughts of Colorado are rich with deep red, sandstone against intensely vivid blue sky and dark green evergreens. Ok, Dakota Hogback's outcroppings were actually grey granite, but my mind wants them red, like the sandstone canyons everywhere in the west. Scramble up those rocks, my friend, and watch that southwest sky break loose a warm, spring thundershower.

Here's why my head was in the clouds of Olympia when I painted this one. Our whole family is on adventure... to a new city; Seattle. It actually has fourteen metro art districts! This is a such a lofty thought, it's in the realm of the greek gods to me! In any case, if we're lucky we'll have a deck with east facing views to the east of Mount Rainier in the Cascade range. No matter the Olympic range is actually to the west. I could only think of an artsy, moody, slightly Van Gogh-esque sky. It does, in fact have silver and pearl white metallic cottony puffs. Such is my vision of our family's new world.

A Chinook is a warm, moist southwest wind off the coast from Oregon northward to Washington state, my new home. It’s named for an American Indian people of the north shore of the Columbia River at its mouth and the language they spoke. I must be internalizing the new landscape I feel around me. I make lively dances out of what I see around me and I feel that warm whisp leap out of a red orange crevice towards the river surface. Do you?

Drift is my mind’s eye view of the foothill out our front door in Colorado, looking downvalley from our family home of almost twenty years. From our front yard, many a beautiful weather pattern drifted into our neighborhood from the mountains or rolled across the plains to meet it’s maker in the Rockies.
We could see miles to towns north of Denver from our nest on the furthest southern edge of the metro area. Our sky had deep, stormy blues, and frequently appearing rose and orange rays. We were on the eastern slope, so I speak here of the storms and sunsets. Like the whole state, these foothills were semi-arid, which gave them not a lot of green, but lots of soil, grey granite rock, and some tough, low, evergreen scrub. The first main foothill that runs for miles flanking Denver is called the Dakota hogback. The jagged rocks cutting the long, sharp, bony ridge qualifies the formation as a hogback. And across it, so much billowing and powerful broke over this ridge, bringing the emotions of the sky to our door.
The deep 1-1/2" museum mount edges of Drift are painted as 3D extensions of the main image.

I glaze the canvas with transulcent washes, let some dry, and wash over them with other colors to get deep, vibrant combinations. Each time I come back and look at it, I add my imagination to what misty landscape is coming alive. Full of life, energetic yet moody, Mystic draws you in. Glistening gold, silver and pearlescent white sparks jump from the meadows towards the sky. Vally growth springs from the land, while strong clouds drive in to nourish them. You’ve brought the earth into your room, and I’ve brought my love of the sky to you.

Flow is inspired by an aerial shot near Point Defiance just north of Owen Beach in Puget Sound. This piece is 2nd in my Puget Sound series, preceded by Stranded at Chambers Bay, now part of a local private collection, and followed by Dickman Mill Park, Ruston Way.
It’s not the particular patterns of the wash on the sand, or the vegetation that interest me here. It’s my thoughts about how powerful the current can be, and how a small a boat can become under it’s influence. If the grade of the sand drops quickly, you could be swept quickly off your feet if you don’t first succumb to the cold.
So much better that we sun on the sand, hop in a boat, enjoy the serenity of the Point Defiance forest, bustling Zoo, Gardens or Aquarium just south of Tacoma. How lucky we are.

Dusk II is part of a three piece series I captured from some of my photos of a Colorado sky, where I lived during the growth phase of my family. It’s a challenge for me to simultaneously paint related pieces, but I did. I even had three easels out at one time. I had to figure out what parts of the adjacent canvases needed to be expressed with the some color I was already using, because the lions share of what I make is somewhat unplanned and spontaneous.
I usually want to move on to something new and different after I paint a piece. I have be different, seek what’s different. That’s me. I chase novelty.
I often research titles in other languages for my work as well. I just can’t settle for sameness. I like titles to sound like I imagine my painting might it weren’t solely visual. Quixotic. My first grade teacher called me her little enigma. Important for retaining a unique perspective, and very telling about how we actually do remain the same in our core as part of being human.

The name of this boat is “Apocalypse”. I kid you not. Her keel is embedded deep in the sand and she is heavily listing. I really wanted to name this painting for her, but I thought it might put off someone who loved the calm of this piece.
The image is inspired, with permission, by an aerial photo shot by OverTacoma.com. Chambers Bay is south of Tacoma, Washington, next to a golf course.
I enjoy the translucence of the water. It enlights the frontal lobe of my mind. This piece is first in a series I’m building of Puget Sound. I’m also inspired to find out who her owner of and if she's been recovered. We shall see.
Visualizing anything from above is something I’m good at since I spent a long time as an architect. It feels comfortable, like the language my mind used working through building floor plans in my mind. I like life from an aerial perspective.

Force of habit and force of nature. Tempête Brillante evolved from a photo of stormy sky over a beach. The habit is where I paint the essence of the image and then depart from it at a point where the final product resembles less of the inspiration and more of my imagination. There’s a great infusion of scrub vegetation on the dune, and the storm and the shrubs speak to each other in wild sparks. I created this visual energy just like earth spins up an ozone draft in response to the change in atmospheric pressure; the scent of an impending tempest. It’s also common for me is when I to think the title of the painting doesn’t sound enough like the painting looks. There’s a gracefulness in the violence of a storm as it roils together as only air and light can… the way brilliant tempest sounds as we speak it en français.

I understand that most landscapes have lots of horizontal lines, but I was looking to create an abstract landscape with less of those. That’s because I’m a stickler for individuality. No Sé Bay has not a one. Even if you can tell what those shapes are, none are the color you’d find them in reality either. And that’s fun in my book too. I superimpose vibrant color onto what I can on the canvas, because deep in my psyche. I’ve got burning, hot energy, despite my being quiet sometimes. You’d never know. Comes with age. When young, I was just a blur, even though when I’d walk in a room you couldn’t help but notice. I’m apparently kidding myself, becasue people say it’s still that way even though I figure it’s better to be a little stealth! Ok, a Regatta is a dignified event setting the stage for at least a somewhat serious competition, amongst a fleet or two of wind powered elegance. I know. I found a bit of humor in how hard these small but plucky boats would fight the massive wave besetting them from the east. And this occurs during an orange sunset, and an oh, so tormenting beast of current. And they survive, to drift off and play during another tequila sunset evening. Did you know so much was happening in this little painting? I hope you enjoy the tale, the scene and my overtime imagination.

When we’re beaming inside, you see that happiness in your face, in the way you move, and in the lilt to your voice. What if I gave you pigment; pastel and charcoal, and you had to move in a way that engaged these materials with the canvas from inside you looking out. Let’s say the patterns your arms and hands could make, and the tints and materials your mind’s eye chose were to express this explosion of internal contentment. We would each choose a different combination of colors, and our arms and hands would move differently too. Amani has a golden, metallic river, with a white pearlescent, sky at its source. The airy, yet vivid earth cradles this river as it winds towards us, out of the canvas. I had kind thoughts and peaceful wishes while I painted Amani. This word, in Swahili, means harmony and peace. In Arabic, it means desires, aspirations or wishes. I was thinking about a person I knew who would be departing us soon, and these were the emotions I had about her when I created it. If I had a vision of the gentle path I wished for her, as the painting, Amani evolved, I imagined it would be the soft, beautiful place she’d see in her new world.

Garden runs deep within a place in my heart, the love of gardening, of flora with hues almost brighter than the world can make. The colors of Garden come from a feeling of joy, because that’s what color is to me. There’s the sun too. It radiates the warmth and light the world would sorely miss without. Together, light, warmth and a collage of vibrancy are a universe, however small, within my mind, I could live in most comfortably. Like, say, In a little valley with a winding river, and a blinding display of orange, lime and violet, just like the one in Garden.

Aliran means the flow of the dramatic drift in Javanese and flow or stream in Indonesian. I like the sound of words and sometimes I research to find the right one. Creative in pigment and creative in wordsmithing. There’s a bit of fizz-pop to this river too, as if there’s a little Yellowstone steam pot hidden behind the valley. Nature so often reaches towards water in life, and in my own mind, it’s just more playful, which works well with an effervescent sky. This is typical of me, making something big of something small; a habit of mine.

Vallis translates to valley in latin, and my husband came up with this name. I love it. This piece is my re-imagining of a photo of sun drenched peaks and sloping grassland pastures. As this painting developed, I couldn’t help but add a rushing spring stream emerging from the mountains. In my mind, water completes any image of life. And this cycle allows our understanding of nature as a self sustaining dynamic. Vallis bursts with all the invisible energy in our surroundings. It speaks true about forces that leap and connect to feed everything that grows. The pulse of the earth, basic to our existence, radiates with the light that nourishes all forms of life on earth.

“ ‘Jesen’ means ‘Fall’, or ‘Autumn’ in both Slavic and Croatian. ‘Shizzle’ is urban slang for ‘sure’. As I painted this sunset and added the trees, I felt it festive, and I used the edge of the palette knife to make the leaves fly like sparks. It's as if the Autumn sun has become so hot, the grove has ignited in celebration of life. The dusky embers far behind the cool forest floor glow like a mirage. Jesen Shizzle sizzles, and it's a favorite amongst those who've seen my work. And I do, if I can, like my paintings to sound like what they look like, ‘Fall sure! ’ ."

To me, Tillicum Lately is a question, and no, I haven't seen him around! Puns aside, to Washington state, Tillicum has many meanings; a village, a street (with a k instead of a c), a World's Fair Attraction, a word for friend or kin in the Chinook Indian language. I visited the attraction off the coast of Seattle, and it was lush and friendly, a nice place to be, I thought. The culture here has a kind of mysticism I like, a warm feeling I felt when I looked at this finished painting. It looks like a peaceful, lush, friendly place. Fortunately, I've moved here, and it feels good!

A perfect, sunny, warm day touched with crisp fall morning sunlight found me on a the river bank at the Ojo Caliente resort in New Mexico. The easel legs were driven deep into the sand so it wouldn't all tumble. I created my own subconscious abstraction of the shapes on the banks of the river. Some vegetation here, a rock there; sandstone banks beyond. The acrylic glazes I mixed were just enough to bring it back to my studio in Denver and let my imagination complete it with pastel and charcoal scribbles. It turned these shapes into my own manifestations of what I felt. Playful, surreal and peaceful along the banks of the Rio Ojo Caliente.

River Neisti translates from the Icelandic language to River Spark in English. You can see the ignition of life from the source of this river. I do imagine personalities in nature. In fact, Niesti , according to Wiki, is the “spirit or fragment of the divine that resides within a physical body.” I somehow think, consistent with Pacific Northwest lore, there’s a life beyond the photosynthetic cycles we’ve been taught in biology. I’m illustrating it, and it’s energetic. Glazes one atop each other fast forward natural processes and make real the rich, vibrant colors you’d see within the Old Norse Gneisti, or “spark”…. just as if you dissected light with the Prism the way it’s inventor, Isaac Newton did.
The deep 1-1/2" museum mount edges of River Neisti are painted as 3D extensions of the main image.

Fleur de Mer began as an experiment with the color blue, of thinning the pigment, of tracing abstract swirls of botanical shapes that seemed to reach upward from a watery floor below a gentle current. Some of the flowery gestures nestling on this watery floor were also a trial in loose, voluminous applications of paint directly from the tube, then using a palette knife to coax these shapes into being slightly more recognizable without loosing their completely expressionist nature. Into the deep blue stains and washes, this petite garden was created, as gently as the name Fleur is pronounced, like the subtle underwater drift effecting a never ending sway.

Yes, vertically, and close up I do see an Emerald Empire State Building being showered by an arc of confetti. Such is my mind. Horizontally though, I began by washing the canvas with colors meant to at once soothe, yet capture attention with their vibrance. I found, though, I had laid an emerald green body of water far off in the horizon, even though I had intended not to paint anything literal. Wanting to include unrecognizable shapes, a scribed an arc with a brush and couldn't help but turn it into a rainbowed shower over this body of water. In papaya, mango, lemon and lime, this Calypso palette of energy mischievously fizzed into a happy explosion off the moody purple sky. The deep 1-1/2" edges of your canvas have been painted as extensions of the main composition.

Fleur de Feu is a garden in flames. It's second of three in a series that can be displayed as a triptych. The first, Fleur de Mer, french for Flower of Sea, was painted in 2016, and is loved and often remarked upon in my studio. It's a cool blue fathom with flowers softly undulating from the sea floor, in the current, towards the surface. A Fleur de Feu, or french Flower of Fire, should not survive, but for this imagined place. The only place it may thrive in the real world as well as in the painting, is in Fleur de Lumière, which is the last in the series. The Flower of Light painting emits a vivid, sunny yellow, and bursts with the light of the sun. Each painting in the series is an extreme; Cool blue water, hot red Fire or intense yellow Light.

It was a gorgeous Fall day in Arvada, Colorado. A light breeze with a touch of warmth made it perfect. A friend and I were painting plein air, and I'd been looking forward to working with a new, multi-media, abstract, perspective on landscapes. I was standing on the east edge of Tomlinson, just in front of a sidewalk rendered in in blue, paralleling a spit of land, in brown and orange, that contained the park lake. So prominent were the lake and the mountains beyond that they're joined together a huge blue shape. Two particular trees that dwarfed the lake became the red evergreen and the blue torch reaching the the sky wth scattered explosions of foliage. From the spit of land on the left is the vedgetation at lake's edge that the torch is wafting from the earth. There are no requirements in abstract landscapes other than the poetry it makes you feel.

Pequeño Grande means Little Big in Spanish. This work is an abstracted view from the bottom of the Rio Grande canyon near Taos. The river here is still small, as is the gorge. It was a gorgeous, sunny, fall day with a toasty breeze I reveled in. I sketched numerous canvases there and brought them back to detail in my Denver studio. In this painting, the midground rock formations were backed by the more solid canyon wall, shown in deep indigo, which was capped with a smarmy indigo beret I accented with orange sandstone shapes. The vegetation and fallen rock are scribbled with soft charcoal, and you'll find the pastel pigment deep and rich over top the complex glazed layers of acrylic paint. Pequeño Grande may be little, but it's impact is big.

Flutter is a celebration of vibrating hues contrasted in acrylic paint, and to me, it looks like it's in a state of flutter. I usually lay out my tubes of media in the order I plan to layer them. First was my phthalo green earth, then the process cyan blue sky, and turquoise to meld the terrain with the sky... then the brilliant sun's heat in process magenta and cadmium red. The scribbly calligraphy radiating from the sun is visible warmth we feel on our hands, our backs, and in our mind's eye while this light brings life to everything that grows and reaches towards it.
Flutter has two canvases, each at 30" x 40". If they're mounted horizontally, with the long canvas dimension vertical, you will probably want about 1.5-75" between them for a total width of 61.5" wide and 40" tall.

Peggy is an artist who's last name is McGivern. Her home in Taos has a fenced back yard except along it's rear that opens onto their own field, and beyond is a stunning mountain panorama. I was among the students in her workshop in October 0f 2017 who wandered back to pick their own easel spot. I stomped down some brush to stand on after I'd set up, and thought about what I learned. I wanted my brush to stay loose, and abstract what I saw with shapes the weren't even in what I actually saw, yet mix it with just a few recognizable forms. I'd seriously slept dreaming that I had in a brush in my hand doing some of what I saw Peggy do. That's how strong my interest was in breaking from the controlled, rectilinear style I got from my Architectural career. And I did. That warm sun, slight breeze and and ambient nature sounds put me in such a relaxed mood, I made the transformation; at Peggy's.

I don't think rays of energy have to resemble those of the sun. Blue flames propel rockets into space. Copper produces blue flame, lithium and strontium a red flame, calcium orange, sodium yellow, and barium, green. The synapses in our minds carry the sparks of imagination. Can you see the spark trails of pearl white and gold metallic paint?
That's where it all comes from. If your desire propels you to dance, to produce, to love, we create that which carries the earth through time. The sparks that appear to scatter and shatter from a sparkler are as much like the the spirit each one of us has, as is the force of the sun's heat sustaining our world.

I set out to paint intense brightness and light. This is white; there's nothing brighter. I glazed around the spot of white heat with process yellow hue, graduated the glaze to deep cadmium yellow, then to cadmium orange, then vermillion. Once I brushed on the hot hues of red and magenta, I felt they needed to be foiled by the coolness of green, blue, purple... which became a meadow. Meadows need wildflowers; flecks and stalks... that aloft in the wind, swirl back towards the searing light, their source of life. At once fierce with heat and swift breeze, candied with petals that are still soft to the touch, "Meadow Blaze" is alive with forces of nature. A foreground of smoldering red earth covered the lower two thirds of the canvas. I added a purple-glazed sky to the upper left, pierced by an intense glowing, sun. A turquoise green flock of birds scattered from my palette knife away from the left side of the sun. Then I was tempted to mirror the flock with red-orange gnashes of palette knife. To contrast the gnashes, I scraped over them with thick cadmium yellow to draw forth the brightness and the heat. When I began to lay mixed photo-blue and aquamarine shapes over top those yellow scrapes, I saw a vibrancy and impact explode. Like floating scraps of blue crepe paper, the shapes appeared to flutter in front of the hot sun, while the flock headed home before the sunset.
I get so inspired by color, that as a painting progresses and my imagination takes shape, the canvas itself drives my next movement until the piece exhibits a vision and a feeling that is complete.

You will, I promise, see the little city or town nestled in the ravine and up to the palisade. It's nestled under the orange-yellow sky.
A photo was given to us as a challenge by our art guild. It had a tall, broad, cloudy sky, with a narrow spit of land and minute buildings at the bottom. I expressed the clouds with blue and purple tonal glazes and laid on a heavy purplish black strip of ground at the bottom. Sandwiched between the lowest layer of clouds and the earth's surface was an eerie energized green and yellow aura. The moment before I was about to add these tiny, distant grain silos from the photo, a guild member asked me to turn the canvas upside down. We saw so many more images this way, I was compelled to reinforce them, including a minute city at the top of the canvas instead of the buildings that were originally to be added to the bottom. The sky had become a stream, and the village was now Upside Town.
Please also note that the in-situ image shows an additional mat and frame that may be added but are not included or necessary. The deep 1-1/2" edges of your canvas have been painted as extensions of the main composition.

My friend Kasia shot an unbelievably rich and balanced image in Taylor Park. In the foreground to the Matchless Mountains in Gunnison National Forest, Colorado, is a body of water; a reservior. It's was created by the Taylor Park Dam which dams the Taylor River as part of the 1937 Uncompahgre Project.
While the shape of the lake is somewhat realistic and the mountains maintain the profile and spirit of the range behind it, my imagination quite expectedly took over elsewhere. I added numerous minor pinnacles in the mid-ground and manifested the bubbly, beautiful day in the sky as if it effervesced joy. The last vignette is Kasia's photo, the inspiration for this work.

Mariposa Place is a road that skirts an open field in Taos, New Mexico. An artist group and I set up Plein Air on a beautiful day in September, though we did have to grab our canvases from flying in the wind! This was a workshop, and I was stretching myself to do an abstract landscape, since what I do is usually rectilinear, which comes from my background as an architect. I practically turned the shrubs in the foreground into fire. The trees in the background frame the Santa Fe National Forest mountains beyond. Mariposa is my second painting in the Taos series, and it has the incredibly deep, complex flamboyance I'm used to. Mariposa explodes with the fresh energy of my forging into this new venture.

I purposely drove down, mid-winter, to a bridge over Platte River near our house take a photo. The ice and current created serpentine shapes that drew your eyes to the source of the river. It emerges from Waterton Canyon in the foothills of the Rockies. I brushed out a yellow and blue river with white, snow covered indigo mountains below a teal green sky. This canvas had energy, but missed the inspiration I needed to finish it. A year later, I brought it down to gesso white over top and start a new painting fresh. Instead I decided to fade out the edges to draw the focus to the river current, it's source, and the mountains beyond. I abstracted fresh, unrecognizable shapes radiating from the landscape. The edge of my palette knife gave life to the pearlescent sparks that completed the pithy impact of nature in full force.

Salvo has two meanings. One is a concentrated fire that will shatter any fortification, as in captain Bly ordering, "Fire the next Salvo, Swabs!" Interestingly enough, the other definition of the word Salvo is to have a reservation or an exception. Despite how one may protect and fortify the reservations that prevent one from bursting forth into the brightest endeavor one has yet made, the blitz of Salvo will completely dissipate those reservations. In our core, this is who we all are.

Glistening tidal pools of water. At least that's how it started. As I worked with the glazes, I began to feel space; weightlessness, and fumes of heated, particle infused gases, billowing into new planets and comets; fuming sparks fading and shining into extra-stellar bits of light. Metallic silver calligraphic trails began to spiral into the vacuum. This explosive but graceful dance of a newborn star's evolution only hjnts at the distance. Because Nebula Medianoche is a diptych, it may be mounted in many orientations. Each of the two deep wrapped gallery mount piece is 24" x 18". Far and Away is a view of the pasture behind our house with some tiny tree profiles just over a far, rolling hilll silhouette. The trees ware a number of layers behiind some of the foreground ridges, and it was a frigid, misty day. The austere and cold painting I began with didn't have a feeling I'd want for any wall, so I began to make it warmer, brighter, and more playful. This evolution follows a pattern that marks just about all of my art; the more rich and vibrant the painting becomes, the happier I get. Quite a relationship. I hope it's one that affects your own joy as well.

A pale yellow field with a crisp mint haze... and smoldering twigs of trees dancing in the foreground. Smooth, whisper thin glazes that seem cool to the touch, while textured trees grow materially off the canvas, like the incinerating blue hot, blood red flames that lick and spark. I can be so impressed by a combination of colors, I'm inspired to create a painting with the same emotion. A hazy, periwinkle blue was where I started; with hints of deep lavender, rose and a hint of yellow. Even though I began with a serene palette, I couldn't help but to add the brights that make me so happy. Par for the course. These cheery floral shapes appeared; with the spirit of a Batík fabric my mother bought for me in the Caribbean when I was a girl. It's signed to hang vertically, but will truly do well in a horizontal position. Tell your friends the artist said so. Since Curaçao became known as a striking blue liquor, one may forget that it's named after a Dutch Caribbean island just north of Venezuela. It has those dazzling blue pools, harbors and reefs. I began with a with strong, but clear glaze of process cyan, mixing and scraping cerulean blue and turquoise green towards my sun, popping some yellow and red sparks away from this hot, white center. Some of those rays slowly vibrate in slow, wavy orange strings. The next day, I laid down glistening pearlescent sparks and arrows using the edge of my palette knife. “We look forward to seeing Exponential on our wall soon - I was intrigued by it from the first time I saw it. Also, I'd love your take on inspiration, thoughts, ideas etc that you have on the painting. Thanks again.”

“In Exponential, there was a great deal of pushing myself further with glaze and palette knife use… more thoughts here: https://www.heatherart.studio/a1-products/exponential ” I grew up in a small town next to Red Bank, NJ, and left for boarding school when I was 16. I had an internship at the New Yorker magazine, not knowing if I wanted to write. I went The Institute for Architecture + Urban Studies on 5th & 40th across from New York Public Library, for a year in maybe 1981-8. This was as an adjunct part of my undergrad degree from Skidmore, NY. I got my M. Arch. in Denver, [which brought me to my home of almost 30 years.]”

It was hot, hot, hot in Bozeman this June 0f 2021. We set up our easels at the edge of an aspen tree grove for some shade. I painted two scenes from this spot at Graf Park, the other down a trail in an aspen tree grove. These two pieces comprise the first in my Bozeman series. They’re both heady with blue shade and sunny, toasty yellow.
Bird Springs Creek runs through downtown Bozeman and its surrounding suburbs. You’re looking at swirls on the surface of the creek from where I planted my easel at its edge. Playful light dots dance on lime colored grass along with red and orange wild flowers. They create a lush groundcover over which the arching aspen bow, providing the gentle shushing leaf sounds and the shade we so enjoy on this hot day. And through this lush cover threads the creek we listen to while we watch it flow around the bend..
